Remember the early days of CD-ROM gaming?

Myst (1993)
Myst is the game that triggered the popularity of CD-ROM games in the 90s. Despite just being a picture slideshow, it was the most beautiful game I had ever seen at that time. I liked just walking around the mysterious island (I actually had no clue what to do and never actually finished the game) to admire the graphics and mysterious music. Myst remained the best-selling PC game until 2002 (then it was surpassed by The Sims).
The 7th Guest (1993)
Not as impressive as Myst, but impressive for its days nonetheless. Back in the days, former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates even called The 7th Guest 'the new standard in interactive entertainment'. Nowadays it's just a slow-moving adventure with badly integrated video clips, but upon the time of release it won several awards for best CD-ROM game and it helped popularizing CD-ROM technology, just like Myst did.
Star Wars: Rebel Assault (1993)
Star Wars: Rebel Assault, an on-rail shooter, was my favorite first CD-ROM game and is one of the few first CD-ROM games I still like. It offers varied gameplay elements (though they all involve pointing a cursor and shooting in one way or another) and the game offered a great example of how to use the Star Wars franchise in a cool way in a video game.
The Journeyman Project (1993)
I always felt The Journeyman Project was a game with more personality and a better storyline than Myst and The 7th Guest. It didn't look as great and a major deal of the screen was used for the interface, but the game offered a fascinating and involving story about time travel. The sequel Buried in Time (1995), that came on 3 CD's, was even better and is still one of the best adventure games I ever played.
Return to Zork (1993)
With the arrival of CD-ROM technology Infocom and Activision decided to remake the classic Zork text-adventure into a graphical point-and-click adventure, resulting in Return to Zork. The intro has a great homage to the original Zork games (showing text and cursor as in the original), but the game didn't age too well, mainly due to a clumsy interface.
Hell: A Cyberpunk Thriller (1994)
Hell: A Cyberpunk Thriller is yet another adventure game (but this time third-person) that took advantage of the CD-ROM technology. It contained high-res graphics (well, for its time), FMV-movies and digital speech by famous actors as Dennis Hopper and Grace Jones. It wil be more remembered for the excellent 'dark noir' atmosphere than for its gameplay.
Night Trap (1992)
Night Trap was first released for Sega CD in 1992 and it wasn't until 1994 the DOS version came to the market. The main gameplay is switching cameras to detect criminals, making it a kind of bad memory game with B-actors. Not great at all, but everyone wanted to play it since it was removed from store shelves at Toys 'R' Us in 1993 when some senate members (who probably never played it) proclaimed the game was 'shameful', 'ultra-violent', 'sick', and 'disgusting'.

I got my first 3D accelerator Matrox Mystique in 97. At that moment, I realized computers had finally surpassed consoles in graphics speed.

I had a CD-i system, which was basically a system that played Sega Genesis and Sega CD games. I had about about 10 CD-ROM games for it. The best was Tomcat Alley. I was, and still am, a huge fan of the F-14 Tomcat. At the time I was the envy of all of my friends. I currently have the Kega Fusion emulator on my computer, and the first game I downloaded was Tomcat Alley. I play the games on the emulator more than I play my Dreamcast, N64, PS3, PS4, or my 360.

I don't think I ever had an up-to-date computer in my house growing up, but it meant that I got to play most of these games and more. My grandpa had Rebel Assault and Return to Zork, and my cousin Brent had Hell. My friend Danny had Rebel Assault 2 and a bunch of other point and click adventure games from lucasarts. Brent's parents(my aunt and uncle) were obsessed with games like Myst and 7th guest. Another really cool game of that genre was Shivers, which was made by Sierra I believe. Good article, brought back some memories for me.

Just remembered another Sierra game called Lighthouse that I enjoyed playing. True, replay value was lacking, but I really miss the point and click genre.

Pretty Cool - Digital Pictures is in talks to re-release Night Trap along with some of their other titles in the near future. Improvements would include easier game play and higher resolution graphics. If the re-release does well enough they may also try to make a Night Trap 2. Also you forgot to mention that Night Trap (aka Scene of the Crime) was originally planned for release on the ill-fated Hasbro NEMO which would have played games on VHS tapes but the whole project was scrapped hense the game's first release being on SEGA CD instead in which they were able to include SEGA labled equipment and renamed the good guys the SEGA Control Attack Team (or S.C.A.T.). SEGA was later replaced with Special in all non SEGA versions (there was also a release on SEGA 32X). Also I think it should be re-released as a digital download only as it may be a waste of both time and money to put it on a disc.

PC gaming for me was before CD rom and after. The first PC we had didn't have a CD rom and when games started coming out on CD rom we got a new computer and wow, it was amazing having the sound and huge games. It wasn't long before CD rom sucked because it was soooo slowwww. When hard drives got big enough you always did a full install so the load times were bearable but we still needed CD roms to get the data because the internet was so slow.

MYST is possibly the greatest puzzle adventure game of all time, I have it on PS1, PSP and 3DS. I also have the first two sequels, Riven (5 discs!) on PS1 and it's also really good by the way, and MYST III: Exile on PS2. I've also played Star Wars: Rebel Assault II on PS1 and it was pretty good (and infact I beat it although the ending was kind of frustrating) but I've heard it isn't nearly as good as the first one.

I had a friend who had Riven on ps1 and I was amazed by the five discs. I thought that it was massive at the time. Never played Exile. Having played both rebel assault games, I prefer the 2nd one, hands down. (Though I have to admit the first one is much harder.)

PC Games always had the most retro feel out of any nineties game, and they are definitely the true example of 'started from the bottom.' because they literally went on to surpass ALL console standards, even today the PS4 is still playing catchup but it has done so pretty well, only being a smidge behind of PC standards but that smidge is only noticeable to the trained eye, not someone who is just gaming for gaming. Point is: they pretty much have PC standards.
PCs themselves, I loved playing these games. I'm still trying to remember this game where you walked in an amusement park with this green dinosaur guiding you, it was fun but I can not remember it. Diablo is definitely the most revolutionary though, I still play it even. The gameplay is good and the replay value is very good for its time, with the ever-changing dungeon theme still being something I wish was in most games today. And being able to keep your stats on multiplayer is awesome.
